World Health Organization Issues Concern Over Acute Shortage of Weight-Loss Medications

Fewer than a tenth of people eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy have access to them, states the WHO as it issues its first guidance on the drugs.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to broad access to the injections that can aid individuals in losing substantial body mass, notes the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Even in the present most favorable scenario, the production of GLP-1 therapies would only suffice for around 100 million people – less than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The advice urges nations and manufacturers to expand access, by strategies like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in several countries in 2026.

The injections imitate a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance the sense of being full so users eat less.
