Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
