This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
