The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, did not confirm this decision right away following his triumph in November.
"My choice rested on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani on Monday.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he is from a famous family.
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
