The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I walk into the room, the young midfielder picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.

A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
