A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country grappling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose of the attack has not been established and no arrests are in custody, police said.
Authorities indicated that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a building close to the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the site managing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, according to reports.
"The report indicates the deceased was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," a police statement said.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the crime scene.
Authorities have requested anyone who saw the event who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to find their destination," added an official.
His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He spoke out bravely about topics not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the citizens to refrain from sharing graphic images from the incident, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's three sons.
Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
In addition to his media career, Stock was active in various business ventures, including protective services, providing elite guarding services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in building administration and was involved in tenant removals.
His death has shocked the country and led to an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the government and various organizations.
A government minister said he was angry and saddened by Stock's untimely death.
"He expressed his views fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my policies as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we ought to be," he stated.
A political leader stated the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a tragedy for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director expressed that "DJ Warras was far beyond a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought happiness and vitality to every performance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his presence, kindness and sharp wit, adding that his memory "will endure".
South Africa, the continent's most industrialised nation, has one of the planet's most severe rates of violent death, driven by theft-related violence and organized criminal activity, with some 63 people murdered daily according to recent data, as per official statistics.
