The Lakers star knew his monumental run of reaching double digits was at risk. When it mattered most, however, it was not his focus.
The smart move was to pass the rock – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, his remarkable run came to an end.
LeBron's astounding run of over 1,200 straight regular-season double-digit scoring performances ended during a recent game, when the league's career points king was limited to eight points in the Lakers' 123-120 victory over the Toronto Raptors. He delivered the clutch helper, feeding teammate Rui Hachimura for a triple as time expired.
“Nothing,” James stated in response regarding the conclusion of his run. “The important thing is we won.”
James could have attempted to win the game – while also extending the streak – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to pass to his teammate stationed in the corner. Hachimura made the shot, and James exulted triumphantly.
You have to play the game the proper way. Always make the right play,” James explained. “That’s just been my M.O.. That is the way I learned to play. I've played that way throughout my career.”
He is very conscious of how many points he's scored during a game,” stated Lakers coach the coach. He made the play just as he has countless times.”
He returned to the floor for the final time with 5:23 remaining, the result and the streak on the line. His tally was a mere six points from 3-of-15 shooting at that juncture.
He got a bucket at 1:46 left to level the contest but then missed a shot at one minute to go which could have gotten him to double digits.
He passed up another shot – even though he had a chance. A teammate found him with a few seconds left, however, James opted to make the extra pass instead.
The basketball deities, if you approach it correctly, they tend to reward you,” Redick added.
The record began on Jan. 6, 2007. It stood as the most extended double-digit streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan had 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787, and The Mailman was fourth on the list at 575.
LeBron is such a team-oriented player,” said Lakers center a fellow Laker.
He simply plays the sport. He had the opportunity but because of the player he is and his character as an individual, he made the pass, passed it to Rui and we won the game.”
Reaching double digits was usually an afterthought early in the fourth quarter began. Throughout his run, he had achieved double figures entering the fourth 1,266 times before this game.
Yet two such single-digit games after three periods took place in the last week: He had nine points entering the final quarter against Dallas last week, then had six before the fourth quarter against Phoenix earlier in the week.
He succeeded in keep the streak alive in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it finished – but he still rejoiced regardless.
“I always just make the best play. That’s automatic, regardless of outcome,” James said. If you make the right play, the game gods consistently giving back to me.”
