Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
