Gavin Newsom, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as governor ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he added.
He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and pushing a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from California and suggested eliminating the state's ability to provide trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recent tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and four injuries.
The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had before indicated he was holding back $40 million from the state for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, fails to grasp national statutes," the governor's team responded in a last month's statement responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
A recently conducted survey found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom ought to campaign for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.
Some time ago, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The idea that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
