Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
