American Navy Commander to Inform Congress as Bipartisan Scrutiny Grows Over Boat Strike

A high-ranking US Navy admiral is set to provide a classified update to lawmakers monitoring the military this Thursday, as investigators probe a American strike on a vessel in the Caribbean waters. This event, which reportedly struck a craft transporting drugs, allegedly involved a second strike that eliminated any remaining individuals.

White House Justifies Actions as Self-Defense

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Monday stated that the follow-on engagement was conducted “in self-defence” and in accordance with laws pertaining to armed conflict. Cross-party scrutiny has increased over a account that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order in September to strike the vessel.

Democratic lawmakers have said the claims, initially disclosed last week, could constitute a war crime, and Republicans have also expressed their apprehensions about the lawfulness of the attack on September 2nd. The House and Senate military oversight panels have initiated inquiries into the recent series of US military strikes on boats in the Caribbean region and eastern Pacific Ocean.

“Secretary Hegseth directed Adm [Frank M] Bradley to execute these military actions,” stated Leavitt. “The commander worked well within his authority and the law, directing the engagement to ensure the vessel was neutralized and the danger to the United States was eliminated.”

In her comments to the press, Leavitt did not challenge the account that there were individuals who survived after the first attack. Her justification came after ex-President Donald Trump a day earlier remarked he “wouldn’t have wanted that – not a follow-up attack” when asked about the event.

Mounting Congressional Concern and Internal Support

Monday evening, Hegseth wrote online: “Adm Mitch Bradley is an national hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made – on the September 2nd operation and all others since.”

A month following the strike, Bradley was promoted from commander of JSOC to chief of US Special Operations Command.

Anxiety over the administration’s armed actions against suspected narcotics-trafficking boats has been building in Congress, but particulars of this subsequent attack stunned many lawmakers from across the aisle and sparked stark questions about the legality of the operations and the broader policy in the region, particularly toward Venezuela's leader Nicolás Maduro.

The congressional members indicated they did not know whether the recent report was true, and some Republicans were doubtful. Nevertheless, they said the reported targeting of individuals of an first rocket attack posed serious concerns and deserved further scrutiny.

White House and Military Officials Reiterate Stance

The administration commented after the commander-in-chief on Sunday strongly defended Hegseth. “Secretary Hegseth said he did not command the killing of those two men,” Trump stated. He added, “And I believe him.”

Leavitt said Hegseth had spoken with members of Congress who may have voiced some concerns about the reports over the weekend.

Gen Dan Caine, the chair of the military's top officers, also communicated over the weekend period with the two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers leading the Senate and House armed services committees. He restated “his faith in the experienced commanders at every level”, Caine’s office stated in a statement.

The statement added that the call focused on “discussing the intent and lawfulness of operations to disrupt illicit trafficking networks which threaten the safety and stability of the western hemisphere”.

Congressional Figures React and Promise Probe

The top Senate Republican, John Thune, on the week's start generally defended the missions, repeating the White House line that they were necessary to stop the flow of illegal narcotics into the US.

Thune stated the panels in the legislature would look into what happened. “I don’t think you want to make any conclusions or inferences until you have complete information,” he said of the 2 September strike. “We’ll see where they lead.”

After the news article, Hegseth wrote on the end of the week that “fake news is delivering more fabricated, inflammatory, and derogatory reporting to undermine our remarkable warriors fighting to protect the nation”.

“Our ongoing missions in the Caribbean are lawful under both American and international law, with all actions in accordance with the rules of war – and approved by the most qualified military and civilian lawyers, up and down the military hierarchy,” Hegseth wrote.

The Senate Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, labeled Hegseth a “disgrace” over his response to critics. Schumer called for that Hegseth release the video of the attack and appear under penalty of perjury about what happened.

The Republican senator for Mississippi, Roger Wicker, the chair of the Senate military panel, pledged that his panel’s inquiry would be “conducted thoroughly and by the book”.

“We’ll discover the facts,” he added, stating that the implications of the report were “serious charges”.

The September 2nd engagement was one in a series carried out by the US military in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific as Trump has ordered the deployment of a naval group of naval vessels near Venezuela, including the biggest US carrier. More than 80 people were killed in the series of attacks.
