"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are fitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," a spokesperson involved in the effort commented.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the yacht in which Castro landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the country began.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Responding to recent proposals, a high-ranking official from Cuba insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to locate the vessels and ensure the safety of the sailors.
